Chapter 2: Meals and feeding

Introduction

Before she was sick, she would make supper for me, then I was doing it more and more, then I was doing all the grocery shopping. It evolved over time to the point that I was the primary caregiver.

Among the many types of support caregivers provide, meal preparation is usually high on the list. While providing nutritious meals will obviously be a focus, it is also important to try to maintain the social aspects of eating, to make it an enjoyable part of the day that both your loved one and you, as caregiver, look forward to.

The importance of food

Food plays a vital role throughout our lives and is necessary to keep us alive. But we also associate eating with some of our fondest memories – time spent with friends and loved ones, and cultural celebrations such as birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, and Kwanza.
