Chapter 3: Recognizing and responding to your grief

Introduction

I worked with people who knew Rachelle a long time and were deeply upset by her death. As a newer employee, I didn’t know her well and so I didn’t really feel entitled to feel sad.

Introduction

Although everyone who knew your co-worker who died will be impacted to some degree, not everyone will experience grief in the same way.

Regardless of the circumstances, it’s important that you take time to recognize and acknowledge your grief, which may or may not be like that of other people who knew the person who died. It may take some time for you and your co-workers to figure out how to get the support you each need.

This chapter outlines some of the challenges and benefits that come with different workplaces. Every workplace has its own culture and unique group of individuals, which will have an impact on your grief, and how and when you express it.
