Chapter 3: Sleep disturbances
How poor sleep can affect caregiving
I remember every little thing totally agitated me. What was wrong with me?
Not enough sleep and poor-quality sleep can affect your caregiving. You may find yourself getting impatient, angry, or resentful and then acting in a way you later regret. You may begin to question your role and your ability to carry out day-to-day activities or provide safe care. It may also impact your physical or mental health and your ability to think clearly.
Roll your mouse over each of the boxes below to find out more.
Physical health
Your body may not be able to fight off a cold or flu. You may experience flare-ups of an existing health problem.
Mental health
You may feel less able to cope with the emotional ups and downs and stresses of caregiving. Sleep issues have been linked with depression.
Memory or trouble thinking
You may experience difficulties remembering things and thinking clearly. You may feel like you are “in a fog.”
