Chapter 5: The moment of death

Key ideas

  • Many people hope to be present at the moment someone close to them dies. This is not always possible.
  • It is important to remember that there is more to your relationship than where you are at the moment of death and that you are present in spirit if not in body.
  • Shock is common following the death of someone important to you. Ask for the help you need.
  • Certain religious and cultural traditions at the moment of death and afterwards may be important to you, your family, the person who has died, and the community. Let the health care team know about these ahead of time.
