Every family has its own unique history. Our brothers and sisters are among our first and longest relationships. They are often our playmates growing up. They may have been a source of tension or rivalry. Older siblings may have taken on a parenting role. Our relationships with brothers and sisters often change a great deal as we choose different paths in life.
When a sibling dies, the grieving can be demanding. Some feel guilty for not preventing the illness or death. Many feel badly for surviving when their sibling did not. Others start to fear their own death for the first time. Some siblings feel their grief is not recognized as significant as that of grieving parents or children.
Depending on the family situation, your role may change. The death may require you to take a bigger role in the family. You may need to take more responsibility for aging parents or help raising nephews or nieces.
